(Oranjestad)—The neighborhoods of Bushiri and Dakota were filled with joy, music, and tradition on Wednesday afternoon during the Dera Gay celebration. As part of the initiative “Let’s Celebrate Dera Gay in the Neighborhood,” the Government of Aruba, in collaboration with the National Holidays Celebration Commission (CCDN) and UNOCA Aruba, brought the San Juan tradition directly to the community.
The cultural trailer began its route at the Bushiri Complex, where residents of all ages gathered to enjoy a program showcasing Aruban culture. From Bushiri, the celebration continued to the Dakota Community and Sports Center, where a large number of community members actively participated in the various activities.
Throughout the route, Grupo Masiduri performed the traditional San Juan dance, while Grupo Cariño provided the musical entertainment. The public also took part in traditional competitions such as candle blowing, the goat call, the hen call, the flag hunt, and Dera Gay, creating an interactive atmosphere where both adults and children could enjoy themselves together.

The community’s enthusiasm was evident throughout the event. Many residents expressed that bringing the Dera Gay celebration directly into the neighborhoods makes it more accessible and strengthens the sense of community. They emphasized that the activities give children the opportunity to learn about and appreciate a tradition that is part of Aruba’s cultural identity, while older generations can pass on the customs they inherited. According to the residents, keeping this type of celebration close to home helps preserve Aruba’s cultural heritage and encourages greater community participation in national traditions.
The celebration continued on to Mabon Kavel and concluded with a grand finale at Carnival Village in San Nicolas, where the community came together to celebrate Aruba’s cultural heritage.
