(Oranjestad)—We are honored to share a touching story of a group of friends from the U.S. who regularly meet on Eagle Beach to lend a helping hand taking care of our cherished beaches by collecting and disposing trash.
This heartwarming tradition started all the way back in 1998, when Bob Zimmerman and a few of his friends took it upon themselves to help properly dispose trash around the Hooiberg Hill. Since then, it became a ritual of them to meet up for four weeks every year and collect trash all over Eagle Beach—with new volunteers willing to join in on their good cause each year.
Bob told us that they usually stay on the island for four weeks, but this year they extended their stay to six weeks. During that time frame their trash collecting group ranged from one person (him) to six or more people. “It just depends on when our friends are here, who’s available to do the trash walk, etc.”
When asked why they have been so dedicated to the cause, Bob shared that Aruba is their home away from home and they feel that they need to do whatever they can to help the island. “For my wife and me, this is our 40th consecutive year coming to Aruba, and my parents started coming here in the late 70’s. Over the 4-6 weeks we’re in Aruba we meet-up with about 100 friends. Aruba is TRULY our home away from home!”
Thank you Bob and friends for taking care of our beloved island!
