ORANJESTAD – On Saturday, May 6, 2023, the inauguration ceremony of the plaza that bears the name Plaza Tino Ruiz took place.

For this occasion, guests gathered at the police precinct in Noord to honor the fallen police officer Tino Ruiz and his family.

In 2009 Tino Ruiz started the Watty Vos Police Academy and graduated in 2013. Tino worked as a sergeant at the Noord police precinct and was an exemplary, helpful, empathetic, and very dedicated police officer with a lot of passion for his work.

The work of police officers involves many risks. People often do not realize this work’s impact on the lives of the police officers and their families. Being a police officer is more than just wearing a uniform. They are fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters, sons, or daughters who risk their lives every shift to serve and protect the community. Every time police officers starts theirits shift, they hope to make it through and get home safe.

On July 3, 2017, relatives, police colleagues, and the whole community were shocked by the tragic news that Sergeant Tino Ruiz was killed in the line of duty and that Tino would not go home after his shift. This news was extremely hard for his fellow police officers, who had not lost a police officer in the line of duty before.

With this plaza, they want to give the Aruban police its value within the community and create awareness about the dangerous work of police officers. The plaza also serves as a symbol to cultivate brotherhood among the police.
